At a Glance

The 1 oz Dragon Rectangular Silver Coin 2026 is struck by The Perth Mint from one troy ounce (31.1 g) of .9999 fine silver and is Australian legal tender with a face value of A$1. It is a bar-shaped coin, rectangular with rounded corners, measuring 47.60 × 27.60 mm with a maximum thickness of 3.57 mm and a plain edge, in a bullion finish. One face carries a new Eastern dragon by Perth Mint designer Jennifer McKenna with the 2026 date and the P mintmark; the other carries Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III. The Perth Mint caps the 2026 bullion issue at 250,000 coins. The mint supplies it in a sachet, without a capsule, or in tubes of 20.

The Perth Mint — From Royal Mint Branch to the Dragon Series

The Perth Mint opened on 20 June 1899 as a branch of Britain's Royal Mint, and between 1899 and 1931 it struck more than 106 million gold sovereigns. It passed to the Government of Western Australia in 1970 and since 1987 has been run by Gold Corporation, which the state still wholly owns; its refinery is on the London Bullion Market Association's Good Delivery lists for gold and silver. The Dragon Rectangular series began in 2018 as an annual coin, and the dragon has been redesigned repeatedly since. Its designers have included Ing Ing Jong, who drew the first in 2018, Jennifer McKenna in 2019, Sean Rogers in 2022, Wade Robinson in 2023 and 2024, and Lucas Bowers, whose winged dragon ran in 2025. Every bullion issue from 2022 to 2026 has been capped at 250,000.

Eastern Dragon, Charles III Effigy, Micro-Laser Security

The reverse is new for 2026: an Eastern dragon by Perth Mint coin designer Jennifer McKenna, who also drew the series' 2019 dragon. The serpentine figure runs the full height of the coin, head at upper left with open jaws and long whiskers; the mint describes claws outstretched and a body covered in finely detailed scales. In the mint's telling, the Eastern dragon of Chinese mythology stands for strength, wisdom and prosperity. McKenna's initials JM sit on the body, with the P mintmark at upper right and the 2026 date at bottom centre, between the lower claws. The reverse also carries a micro-laser-engraved security letter, visible only under magnification; the legal specification lists a microscopic P. The obverse carries Royal Mint designer Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III, facing left, with CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 1 DOLLAR and 1oz 9999 Ag.

Bar-Shaped Legal Tender — Not a Scarcity Play

This coin is not the efficient way to accumulate ounces. It carries a higher premium per ounce than a kilo bar, so a buyer maximising silver per shekel should choose a kilo bar or the lowest-premium 1 oz coin we stock. Nor is it a scarcity play: 250,000 is a ceiling the mint set for the 2026 issue, not a count of coins struck. It is not the collector version either; the 2026 proof, capped at 3,888 with a numbered certificate, is a separate product. Its A$1 face value is nominal. What the coin does offer is one ounce of .9999 silver whose fineness, dimensions and design are specified in Australian law, from a mint owned by the Government of Western Australia. It suits a buyer who wants Australian legal-tender silver in a bar shape and accepts a coin's premium for it.
