Why physical silver in Israel costs more than spot.

Spot (gold line) is the international wholesale rate — a benchmark, never an actual transaction price. Door (teal) is what an Israeli buyer actually pays for a 1 oz coin in hand: spot, plus dealer premium, plus shipping into Israel, plus 18% VAT. The vertical gap between the two lines is the all-in cost of being a silver buyer inside Israel — and the same gap that gives local holders a structural floor when they sell back into the same market.

The silver spot price — a benchmark, not a checkout total.

The spot price is the live international rate for one troy ounce of pure silver. It updates continuously through the trading day, driven primarily by silver futures contracts on COMEX in New York — the world's most influential silver pricing venue — where contracts trade in 5,000 oz blocks. It represents theoretical silver: raw, unrefined, unminted, settled between institutions.

You cannot actually buy or sell at the spot price. It is a universal reference number from which every real-world price is derived. Every physical purchase adds a premium on top.

The premium — what turns spot into a coin in your hand.

Physical silver always trades above spot because of the real-world costs of producing and moving it. The premium stacks several layers: minting and fabrication; refining to investment-grade purity; wholesale distributor and retail dealer margins; shipping, insurance, and handling; and the dealer's overhead and risk of holding inventory while spot fluctuates.

Because silver's per-ounce price is far lower than gold's, fixed costs like minting and shipping eat a much larger share of the total. That's why silver typically carries double-digit percentage premiums even in calm markets — internationally, a $33/oz spot with an $8 fabrication premium is a $41/oz coin, about 24% over spot before any taxes or local markup.

How we benchmark the door line.

The door line is built from observed market data, not a fixed formula: live spot, recent eBay completed/sold listings (what buyers actually paid, not what sellers asked), retail dealer premiums from established bullion houses, shipping into Israel, and 18% VAT. Sold-listing data is the key signal — it shows real transaction prices, which are usually below aspirational asking prices.

Israel adds another layer: 18% VAT and an import-only market.

There is no domestic silver mining or refining in Israel — every coin and bar in the country was imported. Israeli VAT (currently 18%) is assessed at customs on the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight), so imported silver carries an 18% structural floor before any local dealer markup. Most EU jurisdictions zero- rate or exempt investment-grade bullion; Israel does not.

Concrete: a 1 oz coin retailing internationally at $40 lands in Israel through formal channels at roughly $47.20 (before any local dealer markup). A local seller offering the same coin at $44 is simultaneously above the international retail price and still the cheaper option for an Israeli buyer — that gap is the entire reason the local secondary market trades the way it does.

The flip side: a structural floor for local holders.

Once silver is inside Israel, it lives inside that same elevated price band. A holder selling back into the Israeli secondary market sells into prices that already reflect local VAT and premium — the next buyer is paying that markup too. The import cost is paid once at entry, and the local floor is supported by the same forces that lifted it. That asymmetry is the practical case for an Israeli resident holding physical silver locally rather than chasing international quotes.

Legal, tax & data notice

Pricing: Door and spot figures shown above are weekly closes drawn from our Market Insight ledger and are refreshed weekly. They are estimates of recent market levels — not firm quotes, not guaranteed prices, and not offers to transact at any specific level.

Tax: Israeli VAT (currently 18%) applies to silver bullion sold at retail in Israel. Capital gains tax may apply on resale of investment silver; thresholds and exemptions depend on personal circumstances. Consult a qualified Israeli accountant before relying on any tax treatment.

Customs: Bringing silver into Israel personally — by post, courier, or in luggage — is subject to Israeli customs rules and declaration requirements above the personal-import allowance. Attempting to avoid VAT or customs duties by under-declaring or smuggling silver into the country carries fines, confiscation of goods, and potential criminal penalties under Israeli customs and excise law.

Buying from Lavi Silver Group: every purchase is a domestic Israeli sale invoiced through our VAT-registered business. You receive a proper tax invoice (חשבונית מס) showing the VAT paid and the source of the silver — exactly the documentation to keep for capital-gains accounting on future resale, and proof of lawful provenance if ever asked. None of the customs concerns above apply when you buy from us inside Israel.

This page is informational and reflects publicly available rules and our reading of the Israeli market. It is not tax, legal, or investment advice. Speak with a qualified Israeli tax professional or attorney before acting on anything described here.
